Set in
a splendid bay ringed by mountains and overlooking a picture-perfect
marina, Antalya was fortified by the Romans, and the Turkish
Riviera’s principal resort retains much of its former
charm. In the mid-afternoon, an air of leisurely calm descends
over its old parts. The bazaar remains open but half-staffed,
the owners squatting in the shade, sipping apple tea. Antalya’s
new town offers superb shopping, great nightlife and a vast
choice of restaurants, cafés, and bars.
The archaeological museum is a must, and the town is surrounded
by some of Turkey’s most fascinating historical and natural
sites. Ancient Aspendos’ well-preserved amphitheatre is
home to regular summer concerts which are an unforgettable experience.
